Pharmaceutical Sales A Great Career For Science Degree Graduates

techno15

So you graduated with a bachelor of science degree and you dont want to become a doctor, dentist or work in a lab. You also dont intend to pursue a graduate degree in science either as scientific research is not really your calling. So you might be thinking about what type of careers and jobs are open for university or college graduates with science degrees.

I was in that same situation many years ago as I felt that I would prefer wearing a business suit rather than a lab coat for my working career. I wasnt interested in Petri dishes, Bunsen burners, flasks or dissection tools anymore. I wanted to carry a snazzy briefcase and have business luncheons instead.
So I was fortunate enough to stumble into a career field that I would stay in for fourteen very lucrative and rewarding years. This career was in pharmaceutical sales which turned out to be a perfect match of science and business.

There are many perks and benefits when working as a drug rep in the pharmaceutical industry. Salaries and bonuses could amount to six figures for high achievers and there is the use of a company car. Corporate expense accounts are also available for business entertaining. There are also the travel opportunities that are paid for by the company as many sales meetings as well as medical conventions are often located at nice places.
Being a pharmaceutical sales representative also means that there is a lot of freedom and independence with the job as fixed working shifts are no longer the way for a drug rep. Even better is that for 95% of the time, there is no boss to look over your shoulder while on the job.

Being a drug rep also has some intangible rewards I didnt expect when I first started. The field involves working with medical professionals to bring them useful products that will greatly benefit their patients. Drug reps with pharmaceutical sales forces can be considered as part of the overall health care team since they are playing an important role in helping patients.

So if you are a science graduate and want to do something in business rather than in a purely scientific field, consider pharmaceutical sales as a viable career option.

Volcano Science Projectextreme

techno10

Everyone has heard of the classic volcano science project using vinegar, baking soda, and a little bit of red food coloring. This little experiment, however, is a little more extreme, and a little more realistic (do not worry, it is not actually dangerous!). This guide will teach you how to create a volcano project that really erupts with some force.
Unfortunately, the fake lava is not going to be quite so realistically red, but sometimes compromise means sacrifices! Here we go:
Gather your building supplies. For this project, you are going to need to start with a volcano. A prepackaged paper mache kit is recommended. Next, you need a two-liter bottle of diet cola. Use your paper mache kit to build a mountainous, volcanic structure around the bottle, leaving a hole at the top large enough to facilitate opening the soda bottle. Give your paper mache plenty of time to dry before you attempt the next step, or else you will end up with a sticky mess on your hands.
Paint your volcano. This is where you can get pretty creative, even though most volcanic mountains look pretty much the same. You can go for the standard black and brown color of rocks and dirt, or you can get a little artsy. Why not make a tie-dye themed volcano? It is just a science experiment, and science should be fun! After applying your paint, make sure that it is completely dry before you begin the next stage: Explosion!
Now it is time to add the trigger to the equation. Go to your local convenience store and buy a roll of mint Mentos. It is very important that you buy these in particular, as nothing else will work correctly.
Ready your presentation in a clear, outdoor space (trust me; you do not want this volcano erupting indoors!). Carefully take the cap off your diet cola, which, if you have followed directions, should be housed securely in your paper mache volcano. Commence with a dramatic countdown, and at its conclusion, drop a couple of the Mentos into the cola.
ERUPTION!
This is a fun experiment to do at school or at home, but if you are planning to attempt it, there are a few safety precautions to take. The reaction of the cola to the mints is very strong, and you definitely do not want to put your face near the opening of the soda bottle for the initial eruption. It is recommended that you wear goggles or some type of protective eyewear if you are going to be the one tossing the mints in the soda. Other than that, enjoy the spectacle!

New Technologies in Finance Joseph Wilk on Banking Technology

techno1

Joseph Wilk, credit card and debit card transaction specialist and owner of Millennium Merchant Services, has seen rapid changes in the credit card processing industry recently. Joseph Wilk works primarily with countertop credit and debit processing terminals, wireless satellite terminals, and electronic check readers, but these are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to financial technology. Companies around the world are working to take finance related practices digital and to mainstream those technologies.

Currently, financial companies are jumping to adopt digital wallet technologies. Digital wallets, Joseph Wilk NJ explains, can be used both to purchase items online and in stores. They also can serve as verification devices in situations where identification is needed, such as when purchasing alcohol. Digital wallets can best be understood as multi-part systems, consisting of an individual device, an application that is run on it, and the supporting infrastructure. Joseph Wilk knows that the devices that support digital wallets are often things like smart phones. Various digital wallets are currently being marketed by Visa, Apple, MasterCard, PayPal, and others. Consumers are so far less eager than banks to adopt this new technology, although one does sometimes see someone paying for a product by using a phone.

Digital check guarantee and conversion through the use of electronic check readers is a form of technology of which Joseph Wilk NJ is much more certain. Also known as remote deposit, these check readers allow a check to be electronically scanned and deposited into any checking account. This process was hesitantly adopted and only made legal in 2004 through what is known at the Check 21 act. After a slow start, remote deposit is frequently used by businesses today with the wide availability of digital check scanning technology.

Joseph Wilk NJ knows that, with all of the changes going on in digital banking, banks are looking for ways to keep their customers safer. Citibank, for examples, has replaced the magnetic strip on its cards with a smart chip for increased security. Most banks devote a significant amount of their web presence to addressing security concerns. The has government even stepped in, requiring that banks use a two-step authentication process to verify online banking log-ins. Banks also largely use a process of encryption or scrambling any time there is a transfer of personal or financial data. With banking rated as the second most common activity performed online, it is critical to take extra security steps.

Forensics vs Forensic Science

techno3

If you bring up forensics in a conversation, those involved will often start thinking of scenes from the television show CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). It’s synonymous with scouring crime scenes for minute clues to help criminal investigators create leads in various cases.

Because of the misunderstanding that’s developed about criminal investigations and forensics, many don’t realize that there is an acute difference between forensics and forensic science.

Currently, forensic science gets shortened in most discussions to “forensics.” The word “forensic” actually relates to debates, and comes from the Latin word “forensis” or “of or before the forum.” This concept became most prominent in ancient Rome where both the accused and the accuser involved in a judicial case had to advance their arguments in front of a public forum. This led to the usage of the term “forensics” for both public debate and the presentation of legal evidence.

This concept of “evidence” is what has caused it to run parallel and merge with forensic science. As the judicial system evolved, so, too, did the evidence that was required in cases. No longer was it a matter of verbal debate; instead other forms of evidence were necessary. The concept, that being “forensic” or “before the forum” still holds true. The only thing that has changed is the type of evidence that’s being presented.

While some modern dictionaries will actually merge the two and provide similar or identical definitions, they are quite separate by origin and practical application.

The term forensics refers to public debate which includes the presentation of evidence and rhetoric. Forensic Science is something different. It deals specifically with the gathering, identification, research, and scientific interpretation of evidence to determine such things as who was involved in a crime.

In addition to confusing the terms forensics and forensic science, people often mistake forensic science for criminalistics. However, it’s important to keep these terms in context too. Forensic science involves any discipline that can be applied to evidence. Criminalistics is just one of the subdivisions of forensic science.

Some of the disciplines that fall under the umbrella of “forensic science” are:

-Computer Forensics -Forensic Accounting -Forensic Audio Engineering -Forensic Linguistics -Forensic Pathology -Forensic Psychology -Forensic Engineering -Criminalistics

Criminalistics itself is the scientific discipline which brings together various natural sciences such as biology and chemistry to the examination, identification, and comparison of certain types of evidence. Criminalists deal with biological evidence including DNA and bodily fluids, trace evidence such as fibers, hair, and soil, and impression evidence such as fingerprints and tire tracks. They also are involved with ballistics, drug analysis, crime scene photography and reconstruction.

As you can see, the forensic sciences deal specifically with the research and examination of evidence so that such evidence can be admitted to and used within the legal system. Forensics on the other hand should be viewed not as the science behind the evidence, but as the presentation and use of the research once it’s completed.

Science Update Stem Cells and Cardiovascular Health

techno1

Thanks to a growing body of research, scientists are now recognizing that having more stem cells in ones bloodstream could be one of the greatest strategies for optimal health. For example, a number of recent studies have shown that a greater number of circulating stem cells equated to greater cardiovascular health.

Lets look at some of these studies in a little more detail so you can grasp the potential benefits of supporting your bodys natural release of stem cells into the bloodstream

In 2001, Vasa et al reported that compared to healthy individuals, people with cardiovascular problems had fewer endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in their bloodstream. EPCs are a type of stem cells responsible for the development of new blood vessels. The study also demonstrated that the EPCs isolated from people with cardiovascular problems showed less ability to migrate in tissues. The Vasa group also reported that smokers had fewer EPCs in their blood.

In 2004 Schmidt-Lucke et al measured the number of EPCs in the bloodstream of 120 individuals (43 controls and 77 individuals at risk for cardiovascular problems) and observed these individuals for ten months. At the end of this time, the authors reported that a reduced number of circulating EPCs was linked to a poor cardiovascular health prognosis.

The next year, in a similar but more extensive study, Werner et al measured the number of EPCs in the bloodstream of 19 individuals, and observed these individuals for one year. Overall, the people with more circulating EPCs experienced fewer cardiovascular problems and, conversely, the people who had fewer EPCs in their blood showed increased incidences of cardiovascular events.

Thanks to recent studies, scientists now understand why greater numbers of stem cells in the bloodstream equate to better cardiovascular health. In essence, when a tissue has poor blood circulation, it lacks oxygen. And when a tissue lacks oxygen, it releases compounds that accomplish two specific tasks: 1) attraction of EPCs into the tissue, and 2) conversion of EPCs into capillary cells. Therefore, whenever a tissue is lacking oxygen, a process is triggered whereby circulating stem cells migrate to the tissue and contribute to the development of new capillaries. This leads to greater delivery of oxygen and nutrients, thereby helping the tissue maintain better health.

When we understand that poor oxygen and insufficient nutrient delivery to organs and tissues are two of the most common underlying causes for a wide variety of health problems, it is clear that increasing the number of circulating stem cells becomes one of the most valuable strategies for maintaining optimal health.

Technology For Women And What It Can Offer Us

techno4

The colour pink is often associated with women as more often than not, women look good in pink. Women who have great fashion senses are often eye catching and you may well have noticed that a woman’s fashion sense has begun to extend towards the gadgets that they carry. The rise of feminine technology has been growing steadily and is about to hit a crest. When you say feminine technology what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Pink gadgets!

Since the colour pink has long been associated with women, it doesn’t come as a surprise to see pink mobile phones, pink digital cameras, and pink laptops, among others that can be considered as part of feminine technology. Pink is a dainty colour, eye-candy if you like. Given the choice, fashionable women tend to want to carry trendy gadgets to veer away from the more macho-looking laptops or cellular phones. Women now find it tempting to have a pink gadget, like a pink laptop, to showcase their love for beauty. Most women are aware that most men find a woman to be more feminine if they are wearing something pink, and i have to admit there is something appealing about a confident women seen doing some work on a pink feminine laptop or making a business call with a pink mobile phone.

Technology need not be boring and with the advent of feminine technology, pink and all the other girly colours have become the in thing. Pink may be a favourite, but red is also becoming popular, as well as lavender or pastel colours. You will even see laptops that have designs on it; often utilising many different shades of pink or other feminine colours.

Wouldn’t it be great to take snapshots using your pink digital camera? You will now find digital cameras, mobile phones, and laptops in various shades of pink and as well as other girly colours so finding one that suits your personality is no longer the challenge that it once was. However do not, for a second, think that gadgets with a touch of femininity are lacking in the features or power department. A lot of popular brands now carry fashionable designs but still with the exact same technology and features as more masculine looking gadgets.

This is true especially for laptops. Pink laptops may look dainty and beautiful yet you can be sure that you can still surf the net with ease and do some office or school work simultaneously without having your workflow slowed by unresponsive technology. It is just as important to take note that when you shop for a gadget that will showcase your feminine side, make sure that you check the features as well as the prices first before settling with one particular unit.

So when you talk of feminine technology, it is not only about trends and beauty, functionality is also a must have and one that manufacturers are increasingly more aware of.

The Importance Of Keeping Accurate Notes In Science

techno5

Science is a progressive act. This means that progress in science is a tedious process that requires diligent efforts with respect to record keeping because in the case of every scientist, figuring out everything about a field of study, such as any given sub-niche of chemistry, is impossible, even in a lifetime. Record keeping is of utmost importance and accurate record keeping can and will make the difference between work that is successfully continued by a scientist’s successors and work that is not successfully continued.

In the field of science, all of us stand on the shoulders of giants. In other words, we all learn from our predecessors and build on what they have taught us. However, we are able to learn only from those who have successfully transcribed their knowledge in an accurate and concise fashion so as to facilitate the propagation of the knowledge to those who follow.

Accurate lab notes are a must. Accurate lab notes will have a variety of properties including but not limited to:

An accurate introductory description of the process or processes being studied. For the information following the introduction to be understood in it’s proper context, an accurate introductory description has to be described clearly. Why is this subject of interest? What is the current understanding of the subject and why does it need to be studied further? What questions need to be answered before true progress can be made? All of these question should be covered in the introduction.

Clear and concise methodology. The work that is performed or is to be performed must be clearly spelled out for those reading the notes to understand the important steps to be taken to repeat and confirm the results. Each step must be labeled in detail and must be done so in a way that can be repeated using the notes alone. This is important if results are to be duplicated.

Well documented and understandable results. The results that are discovered by the initial experimenter should also be spelled out in clear detail as they may differ from the results obtained by those following them and trying to repeat their work. If results differ, this should be clearly noted by the scientists attempting to repeat the work and differences in results should also be clearly noted.

Objective conclusions. Conclusions should be recorded and based on evidence and results obtained. If data or results have discrepancies, these should be noted and discussed in the conclusion.

Technology Upgrades That Can Save Your Company Money

techno

If you want to save your company money, there are a few changes that you can make to the technology that you currently use. This will make your business run more efficiently and also help you cut down your costs. Here are some of the most common ways in which you can save some money:

1.Use a Unified Communications Service

Business communications is something that has evolved a lot in recent times. With the advent of VoIP technology, many businesses are now using internet telephony in their offices. Complete IP-based communications systems are now available, and can be used to set up an office’s entire communications system with features such as voicemail, multiple extensions, faxing, etc. You can also use common software programs to hold virtual meetings through the internet. The costs of using internet telephony are often much less than traditional communications solutions. Many companies also offer plans which allow unlimited calling nationwide and to certain countries around the world. If you do business on a global scale, this can definitely help you cut down on your communications costs.

2.Cloud Computing

Cloud-based computing solutions are now getting more popular than ever with businesses. They allow you to save costs on your IT infrastructure by reducing the amount of servers that you use, which will in turn reduce your equipment and labor costs. You can have a cloud-based solution installed on servers that are on your premises, or you can also deal with a third-party data center. By running many applications on the cloud, you will help cut down on your maintenance costs, as you will no longer need to upgrade the software on each workstation. There are dozens of cloud-based solutions available for small and medium sized businesses, which you should definitely check out.

3.Remote Troubleshooting and Administration Tools

Remote desktop access is a technology that has been around for quite some time now, but with advances in remote control software, it has experienced a large gain in popularity as of late. One of the biggest IT-related expenses in an organization involves troubleshooting and maintaining numerous pieces of equipment. Remote control tools can make this a lot more simple for you. They allow technicians to remotely log in to any workstation or server, then perform troubleshooting and maintenance tasks as required. So if a certain PC is malfunctioning or you need to deploy software upgrades across all of your company’s computers, making use of remote access tools can speed things up tremendously for you.

Another good thing about remote access programs is that they can be used for purposes other than just troubleshooting. Some of their other uses include remotely retrieving files, as well as running programs on a PC from another device that wouldn’t be compatible with them, like using Windows-based software on an Android tablet. With their low cost and numerous uses, these software tools can help save your company some money.

Too Much Stimulation With Today’s Technology

techno19

Is there anything more annoying than that person standing ni front of you in a grocery store or checkout line babbling away on a cell phone while a kind salesperson is trying to help them? The cell phone person nods and points directions at the clerk while enjoying a riveting conversation over nothing. There is nothing more annoying and we won’t even discuss people who miss green lights because of their nonsensical cell phone ramblings.

Turn off the cell phone and turn off the laptop and any other portable device you may be carrying with you. There is a certain amount of excitement and adventure in being inaccessible. It can be a little bit scary at first, not being on the grid, not being in constant communication with everyone on the outside world, but it is necessary to do once in a while to regain your sanity.

People have become so reliant on today’s new technology that personal communication has dwindled to nothing. How many times are you on vacation and someone has to dart back to the hotel room to check on the laptop to make sure no important messages were received on the e-mail? There’s a reason to take vacation, but now the new term is “working vacation.”

If you can just stay away from the cell phone for a few minutes, take a walk around the mall and you will see how many mindless drones are babbling away on their cell phones or texting their friends who are likely in the same mall at the same time. It gets to look ridiculous. If you invite friends with kids over to your house, place a ban on use of your computer or they will just sit there avoiding family time to message their friends.

Everybody needs some time to themselves and nothing short of an emergency is worth so much that it can’t wait a few hours. If you check your Facebook pages, chances are that 99 percent of the messages are just gibberish being written by people with nothing better to do. Take some time away from technology and enjoy life.
